How to find the support you're looking for
How to find the support you're looking for
There are lots of ways in which you can get support to improve your health and wellbeing. Support can be through family activities, or engaging in a group that has common interests for you.
There are lots of opportunities you can find in the Live Well York What's On Directory. Or if you want to find out about community venues you can look in the Hubs and Clubs Directory.
If you can't find what you are looking for, then you can get in touch with the Family Information Service.
If you're looking for individual support to meet your needs, rather than through any social engagement, then Live Well York has a Services and Products Directory that will enable you find what you're looking for.
Some support services charge at a commercial rate, some are not for profit, while others may be free of charge. So do look carefully for what you need and do check the Live Well York Buyer's Guide.
Finding the best options for you
There are a number of ways you can get support to explore what options would be best for you.
Family Information Service
The York Family Information Service is a free and impartial information service for parents and carers of children and young people aged 0 to 19 (or up to 25 for disabled children).
They can help with anything and everything around family life and being a young person. If you're a parent or carer and have a question but don't know where to go, then please get in touch.
Local Area Coordinators
Local Area Coordinators help you stay safe, well, independent and connected to your local community.
Local Area Coordinators:
- help raise awareness of available resources
- provide links to local services
- support people with a wide range of issues
- develop resilience and social inclusion in communities
They work with individuals and families of all ages and abilities. They take time to get to know you, your family and friends, your carers and your community, so they can help you to build a strong support network.
Social Prescribing - York CVS
Social Prescribing links people to non-medical sources of support, to improve their health and wellbeing.
People often seek help from health services for things that are primarily social issues, for example loneliness, isolation, financial worries. Social prescribing widens, diversifies and makes more accessible the range of support available to people, enabling them to take greater control of their own health and wellbeing.
Social Prescribers work with individuals to find out what matters to them. They support individuals to access local activities and statutory services with the aim of supporting them to self-manage their health and wellbeing.
Social Prescribers are not Support Workers, Counsellors, Social Care or Mental Health Workers - they support people to connect with these services.
