Getting more help for children aged 3 to 5 years

You can get additional support:

  • if your child attends a childcare provider or school, even where specialist support is needed, the provider or school will still provide additional support for your child and you both whilst waiting for specialist involvement and during. Childcare providers and schools working at Step 3 of Early Talk for York have direct support from Specialist Speech and Language Therapists. Ask your childcare provider or school for details
  • if your child has Special Educational Needs (SEN) the childcare provider or school should put in place additional strategies and support to meet your child's needs. However, if despite this additional SEN support your child does not make expected progress a request can be made for a statutory assessment to consider if your child requires an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
  • from the 'Learning Support Hub,' run by City of York Council, where childcare and school staff or health professionals can request either learning support for your child or guidance and training for the staff working with your child
  • you or anyone working with your child can access Speech and Language Therapy advice via the request for help service
  • support for you and your child around preparation for starting school can be provided in your own home through Home Start York’s Big Hopes Big Futures Programme
