How to guides
The independent evaluation of WellComm in York, completed by the University of York in 2023, highlighted a number of areas that practitioners reported wanting further support with. For each of these areas we have developed some ‘How to’ guides which share best practice and learning from across the city. We've also developed case study exemplification for each area using practitioners working in York to share their great practice:
- how to use the WellComm toolkit with parents and carers, as shown in the engaging parents and carers to support speech and language needs with WellComm case study
- how to use the WellComm toolkit with children under 2
- how to embed the WellComm toolkit into everyday practice, as exemplified in this case study
- how to use the WellComm toolkit with children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), as shown in the using WellComm to support SEND learners in York video (YouTube)
- how to use the WellComm toolkit with children with English as an Additional Language (EAL), as shown in the using WellComm to support EAL learners in York video (YouTube)

Out of school clubs offer
If you're a working in an out of school club and are wanting access to use of the WellComm Toolkit, we operate a free lending service via the city’s libraries and options from local schools and settings. Out of school club staff are warmly welcomed at all of our training.
We encourage you to work with your local schools to understand both individual and cohort needs identified and consider your practice and provision in how you might support and respond to these.
