Safeguarding and welfare

Safeguarding and welfare

Read the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory frameworks on GOV.UK:

Children learn best when they are healthy, safe, secure, when their individual needs are met, and when they have positive relationships with the people caring for them.

The EYFS statutory framework sets out the safeguarding and welfare requirements providers must meet. They are designed to help providers create a high-quality, welcoming, and safe setting where children can enjoy learning and grow in confidence.

Providers must take all necessary steps to keep children safe and well. The safeguarding and welfare requirements explain what all early years providers must do to:

  • safeguard children
  • ensure the people who have contact with children are suitable
  • promote good health
  • support and understand behaviour
  • maintain records, policies, and procedures
