Communication skills develop throughout childhood, and there are many ways to support this at home and school. You can find help, advice, guidance and resources in the following places:

On the Speech and Language UK website, you can find:

  • a progress checker - helping you understand how your child’s development
  • resources and advice leaflets for families
  • programmes and training courses for Early Years settings and schools

On the Children’s Speech and Language Therapy website for York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, you can find:

  • information about the service
  • advice sheets and signposting to other useful websites
  • free training sessions for both families and professionals to book onto 
  • information about their ‘Request for Help’ service

The 'Local Offer' is another useful resource, if your child has Special Educational Needs or a Disability (SEND). There is a specific section on the York SEND website for children with have speech, language and communication needs.
